Lone Birds on the Mara is my latest in a string of pieces that share the wild yet serene realm of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. I can’t get that magical landscape out of my psyche and keep writing music about it. I want to share its raw beauty and serenity.

Sometimes I feel like a Lone Bird out in the wilds and villages of Africa, but I love it.

Sometimes I feel alone in my thinking as I commune with the beings in nature as family members or members of a spiritual community that is at once unified and separate.

For Your Consideration in Best Global Performance. As you read this, I’ll be back in Kenya on the Maasai Mara.

Nature is my refuge from the complexities and horrors of our world (the war in the mid east escalates as we speak). The natural world and my creative world are where I retreat when the dense, human realm is just too much.

I travel to Africa, the Motherland, where it is said the first humans emerged.

In 2013 I started the Singing Tree Institute with David Mutinda of Kitui, Kenya. Our mission is to help mitigate global warming, plant food forests in rural Kenya for subsistence farmers and document songs and dances of the Kamba community.

On one of my trips to Kenya, I was invited to Mara Napa Camps and Conservation Center. While there, I was awed by the beauty, the rhythm and the songs of the animals around, especially the birds. On this trip, I will be setting up a Museum Exhibit at MNC of Nature Sound Installations from Field Recordings I made on my last two trips there. The photographs of Solly Levi will also be on Exhibit.
